The Ocean Decade is working to create an enabling environment for ocean professionals by providing equal opportunities to all through its global platform. The Empowering Women for the Ocean Decade Programme, one of the first Ocean Decade Actions to be endorsed, aims to enhance capacity to explore and promote women’s empowerment in conducting ocean science and in science-dependent governance systems.

Led by Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute of the World Maritime University, the Programme focuses on enhancing ongoing collaborations with partners including government agencies, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, universities, and individuals to deliver substantive research outputs contributing to transformative actions. To further contribute to its targets and goals, the Programme has launched a call to its new Stakeholder Consultative Forum, an advanced platform where participants will have the opportunity to exchange knowledge, support and co-develop good practice to promote women’s empowerment in the Ocean Decade.

Through the new Forum, participants will have the opportunity to connect with peers and world-class professionals in sustainable development. This is a key opportunity to also integrate targets of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life below Water and SDG 5: Gender equality as a powerful tool for breaking down career barriers to women’s participation in ocean science.

The Programme team will organise a virtual introduction meeting for the Forum in early February 2023. If you have any questions about the initiative or wish to know more, please contact: empoweringwomen@wmu.se.

Are you running a project and want to join the movement?
