GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation under public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the State of Schleswig-Holstein (10%). lt is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine research.

Through our research and our commitment to the transfer of knowledge and technology, we contribute significantly to the preservation of the function and protection of the ocean for future generations.

The research unit Marine Meteorology of the research division Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics is offering a position as Research associate Influence of desert-dust aerosols on climate, starting as soon as possible.

We are looking for an enthusiastic research associate (PostDoc) to test scientific hypotheses on the influence of desert-dust aerosols on the climate with new model experiments and observations. The tasks include to further develop an aerosol parameterization, which is for instance implemented in several CMIP6 models. New model experiments for different scales and representation of processes should be performed and scientifically interpreted. The project will be supervised by the leader of the research unit.

The research unit Marine Meteorology works on quantifying and better understanding the relative importance of atmospheric and oceanic processes in controlling climate variability and change on a large range of timescales: from hourly, through decadal, to centennial timescales. The research unit offers a young and dynamic team, an internationally active working environment, the possibility to be part of academic teaching, support on technical questions and arrangements for a flexible work-live balance. Kiel and the surrounding region have with the proximity to the Baltic Sea many offers for recreation and leisure, plus a cultural scene shaped by the university and water sports.

Job Description

  • Fundamental research on the interaction of desert-dust aerosols with the circulation of the atmosphere and the ocean
  • Performing experiments with complex models on high-performance computers, including the development of an aerosol parametrization
  • Scientific analysis of big data sets from observations and models, and graphical display of the results
  • Scientific publications of the results
  • Presentations of results at international conferences of the field
  • Possibility to participate in expeditions to the North Atlantic with meteorological measurements on board of research vessels and at the monitoring station on the Cape Verde lslands

Qualification

  • Very good doctoral degree in Physics, Meteorology, Climate Science, lnformatics, or similar
  • An excellent physical understanding of weather and climate, knowledge about atmospheric dynamics, dust and other aerosols, climate change, weather and climate modelling, and/or meteorological observations desirable
  • Very good programming skills (python, shell scripts, FORTRAN and/or comparable) and first experiences with high-performance computing, experience in using methods of machine learning desirable
  • lnterest and ability for performing model experiments on high-performance computers, knowledge and experience in weather and climate modelling desirable
  • Very good English skills, German is a plus but not mandatory
