GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Marine Biogeochemical Modelling of research division 2: Marine Biogeochemistry is offering a Postdoc in climate uncertainty and CO2 removal (CDR) interlinkage assessment using Earth system modelling and statistical analyses, starting on September 1st, 2022.

Project Description

What happens to the Earth system once we reach our emissions goals? And how much does this reaction depend on how we got there?
The EU Horizon Europe research project “RESCUE: Response of the Earth system to overshoot, climate neutrality and negative emissions” will contribute fundamental knowledge that will bring us closer to understanding the response of the climate and the Earth system to global mean temperature stabilization following greenhouse gas emissions reduction, with or without overshoot. RESCUE will also assess the potential role of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in reducing net greenhouse gas emissions as well as its environmental impacts, side effects and potential co-benefits.

Job Description

The research will involve working as part of an interdisciplinary team where the scientist is expected to provide expertise on modelling CDR approaches. Initial work will involve usage of the newest version of an Earth system model of intermediate complexity (UVic ESCM) to perform a biogeochemical and physical parameter perturbation experiment for temperature stabilisation scenarios to assess the uncertainty space in these underexplored scenarios. Furthermore, the Postdoc will assess the impact of various carbon dioxide removal (CDR) measures by explicitly including them in these simulations. Finally, the interlinkages (i.e., additionality and trade-offs) of CDR measures will be assessed using statistical analysis tools. The candidate will be working closely with integrated assessment modellers, CDR experts at GEOMAR and other Earth system modellers.

Publishing results and contributing to interdisciplinary publications, reports, and synthesis products is expected.

Qualification

Required:

  • A PhD in natural sciences
  • Experience in physical and/or biogeochemical ocean modelling or Earth system modelling
  • Willingness to work with external partners and experience presenting results at international conferences
  • Excellent English language skills (oral and written)

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience in statistical data analysis
  • Experience with model sensitivity experiments (e.g., single or multiple perturbed parameter ensembles)
  • Experience in working with an interdisciplinary team or integrated assessment scenarios
  • Experience investigating carbon dioxide removal approaches (especially marine CDR)

The position is available for a funding period of four years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position is basically divisible. Flexible working time models are possible in principle.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.
