GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

Research division 4 “Geodynamic of the ocean Floor ” invites applications for a Postdoc Refraction seismic in Three Dimensions. We are looking for a PhD candidate for our research project on the Chilean subduction zone.

The successful applicant will work within the BMBF-funded research project

“The structure of the northern Chilean subduction zone imaged with wide-angle seismic and its relation to plate interface motion.”

The data basis of the project is a dense network of ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) and land data from a three-dimensional refraction experiment conducted during cruise SO297 with the research vessel SONNE in spring 2023 offshore Taltal in Chile.

The main task is to process the three-dimensional refraction experiment and includes onset determination of airgun shots, inverting the wide-angle seismic data to three-dimensional subduction zone velocity profiles, and interpreting and publishing the findings.

Essential for the evaluation and understanding of the results is also an integration or comparison with other data sets. For this purpose, a partial processing of these data is necessary (e.g. multibeam data). The project benefits from close cooperation with Chilean scientists who operate offshore geodetic and onshore seismological stations.

Tasks:

  • Data processing of data from a three-dimensional refraction experiment
  • Determination of arrival times of airgun shots recorded on OBS and land stations.
  • Modeling and inversion of 3D velocity models from wide-angle seismic data.
  • Validation, interpretation and comparison with other data sets
  • Publication of relevant results in scientific journals
  • Participation in shipboard expeditions

Qualifications:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Geophysics or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge and experience in seismic data analysis and inversion techniques
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Good skills in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, Perl, Matlab)
  • Knowledge of Linux as an operating system
  • Participation in seagoing expeditions

The position is available for a funding period of 2 years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position can not be split. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.

Please submit your application for this post until 1st December 2022 under the following link: online application

As soon as the selection procedure has finished, all your application data will be removed according to data protection regulation.
