GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

Research unit “Marine Geosystems” invites applications at the next possible date for a Postdoc Geochemical Modelling, related to the occurrence of offshore freshened groundwater (OFG) discharge. Specifically, we are looking for a candidate for our recently approved DFG-funded research project “OFFshore freshened groundwater systems – Emergence and persistence analysis by geochemical modellING (OFFING)”.

Our current knowledge of the functioning of OFG systems is still very limited, which is due to a lack of available data that would allow for an unambiguous interpretation of OFG emplacement. In many cases it remains elusive whether OFG bodies are at present actively recharged/discharging or if the systems are rather equilibrating after a drastic change of hydrological conditions due to deglaciation and sea-level rise. To improve the current state-of-the-art, we intend to use the wealth of geochemical data from two well-studied working areas (New Jersey Shelf, USA and Canterbury Bight, NZ) with the main goal of constraining the timing and emplacement mechanisms of two OFG systems by carrying out thorough quantitative evaluations of high-resolution pore water geochemical data from IODP Legs 313 and 317 and by using 1D and 2D numerical transport-reaction models.

Tasks:

  • (Re-) Evaluation of geochemical data from IODP Legs 313 and 317
  • Application and adaptation of 1D and 2D numerical modeling schemes in well-defined case studies
  • Publication of relevant results in scientific journals

Qualifications:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Geosciences or related disciplines
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Proficiency in publication of scientific data proven by appropriate publication record

Advantageous:

  • Solid background in marine geochemistry and / or
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of numerical reactive-transport models
  • Experience in C/C++ (or a similar object-oriented programming language)

The position is available for a funding period of 2 years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position and can be split. Flexible working hours are possible.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.

Please submit your application for this post until 10th February 2023 under the following online application

As soon as the selection procedure has finished, all your application data will be removed according to data protection regulation.
