Background

Data and information based on ocean observations are of great importance in order to be able to understand and make predictions about the state of our oceans, its role in global climate and processes in the ocean. Without this ocean observation, we cannot sustainably use and preserve the sea. However, data from the direct observation of the oceans are not available in sufficient density and quality. With Shaping an Ocean of Possibilities – SOOP, we want to build a Helmholtz innovation platform to make a lasting contribution to improving the situation.

SOOP was started by the German polar and marine research centers AWI, Geomar and Hereon. It aims at socially relevant technology transfer that promotes and enables innovations in the field of ocean observation. SOOP creates an international network of research institutes and companies, committed scientists, engineers, those hungry for knowledge and supporters. SOOP develops usable, sustainable technological solutions for everyone, which make it possible to build innovative measuring systems for sea observation, which allow highly professional researchers and technicians to take measurements according to good standards, as well as a very broad and varied measurement use by laypeople. We want to enable the construction of good measuring systems that are as easy to use as smartphones and are inexpensive.

SOOP should be an active interface between all partners. With an initially limited financing of SOOP, new, partly open-source innovation processes and structures are to be initiated, tested and assessed. We are looking for people who want to tackle the tasks in the pilot phase with us with commitment and fun and who want to contribute to the project becoming a long-term success and becoming a socially important innovation platform.
