THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry (MMB) studies microbial communities and their functioning in all types of marine environments, from estuaries to the deep ocean, from tropical coral reefs to polar regions, and from the present to the past. The department has well-equipped laboratories for molecular analyses and state-of-the-art facilities for bioinformatics.

MMB is an international and dynamic department and has approximately 80 members, including PhD students, postdocs and Master students from more than 15 different countries. A group of sixteen staff scientists and fifteen research assistants (junior and senior) form the core of the Department. Nearly half of the core staff was recruited in the last four years creating a young, vibrant, diverse and multidisciplinary team.

THE VACANCY

As a Molecular Biology Data Assistant you will be responsible for, among others:

  • performing molecular data analysis using custom analysis pipelines (e.g. for DNA, RNA, amplicon or metagenomic data analysis)
  • assisting users with data handling for bioinformatic applications and accessing computational facilities at NIOZ for MMB and for the entire NIOZ
  • benchmarking and evaluating software and pipeline performances and suggest and implement improvements to NIOZ pipelines
  • producing documentation of the analyses performed for users
  • resolving problems and answer computational/bioinformatic questions from users
  • sample and library preparation for high-throughput sequencing (can be learned on the work floor)

Job requirements

THE CANDIDATE

We are looking for highly motivated and collegial candidates with:

  • a HBO/bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, scientific computing and/or data science, or a HBO/bachelor’s degree in molecular biology or related fields and a proven track record of applying bioinformatic methods
  • good attitude, open mind, and willingness to learn
  • precise and organized working manner
  • experience with high-throughput molecular data analysis
  • competence in data analysis using R or python, basic unix/linux skills
  • flexibility to adapt to the needs of the department
  • willingness to contribute to teaching bioinformatics skills in NIOZ workshops
  • efficiency and accuracy working by yourself and in a team
  • good communication skills in both English and Dutch (oral and written)

CONDITIONS

Employment of this position at Royal NIOZ is by NWO (The Dutch Research Council). We offer a position for a period of 1 year (fulltime), leading to a permanent contract subject to satisfactory performances.

The salary is compliant to the CAO-OI (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Research Institutes) with a scale 8 or 9, depending on the candidates education and experience.
You may expect attractive secondary employment conditions. We offer generous relocation expenses for employees coming from abroad and support with finding accommodation.

Please note that Non-EU citizens can only apply for this position when they have a valid work permit for working in the Netherlands as it is not regarded as a scientific position
