GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.
Project Description
The main research questions are in the area of cognitive multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) SONAR systems. The project will investigate improvements in the detection of backscattering objects (e.g., rising gas bubbles or schools of fish) underwater, considering the scarce resources in autonomous vehicles. Also, optimal parameter selection will be ensured by using machine learning approaches (reinforcement learning).
Qualification
- Prerequisite is a university degree (master’s or diploma) in electrical engineering and information technology, physics, computer science or a related field of study completed with high honors
- Solid knowledge of digital signal processing is required
- Pattern recognition skills are necessary
- Programming skills in either C/C++, MATLAB and/or Python are required
- Experience with SONAR/RADAR procedures and how they work are helpful
- Knowledge of AUVs is beneficial, but not a prerequisite
- Knowledge of the use of hydroacoustic methods in maritime sciences is helpful
- Enjoy learning other fields of research
- Teamwork and flexibility to be part of two groups
- Very good English skills are a prerequisite
If the required degree is not completed at the time of application, the degree certificate must be handed in before the above start date of the contract and the application must contain plausible evidence that the degree can be finished before that date.

The position is available for a funding period of 3 years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position cannot be split. Flexible working time models are generally possible. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).
