Background
The Ecological Restoration research group at AWI Bremerhaven, subject to funding approval, invites applications for a

Research assistant (m/f/d) for the project DEFINE: Literature review on impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems of the North Sea and Baltic Sea and insights into the potentials of carbon uptake of marine ecosystems.

Current research on climate change shows clear impacts on marine ecosystems worldwide. Oceans also play a central role in absorbing the additional carbon dioxide emitted by anthropogenic activities. About one-third of the carbon dioxide released by humans has so far been sequestered by the oceans. In the assessment of marine ecosystems regarding their carbon dioxide sequestering potential and technical processes for carbon dioxide disposal in the European seas, the level of knowledge is still too low to be able to make robust assessments and evaluations.

You will be primarily responsible for conducting a literature study on the impacts of climate change on the North and Baltic Seas marine ecosystems and the knowledge of carbon uptake potentials of marine ecosystems. In this way, the study will provide an insight into the current state of science and give an outlook on possible future climate and nature conservation measures. The project is funded by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, and the results of the study will directly inform the planning of further projects if any.

Tasks

  • Conceptual design and implementation of a comprehensive literature study
  • Analysis and assessment of current literature on the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems of the North Sea and Baltic Sea, as well as findings on the potentials of carbon uptake of marine ecosystems
  • Participation in expert workshops
  • Planning and implementation of project seminars
  • Synthesise findings into a final report

Requirements

  • MSc in marine ecology/biology or similar disciplines
  • Experience in literature research
  • Very good English skills
  • Expert knowledge of the ecology of the North and Baltic Seas
  • Solid experience in designing and building literature studies
  • Profound knowledge in analysis and synthesis of scientific literature
  • Willingness to participate and present results at expert workshops
  • Knowledge in the field of marine conservation
