Background

Embedded within the framework of the Coastal Ecology section, we seek a communicative and ambitious scientist (50%; m/f/d) with expertise in hydroacoustic techniques and sediment dynamics of coastal seafloor habitats for operational sediment ecology in connection with national and international multiuse concepts and necessities for the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. The work will focus on the independent use and maintenance of the scientific equipment of the working group coastal geology at the AWI Wadden Sea Station and the maintenance of the scientific equipment on board of research vessel (RV) Mya 2, including data quality assurance.

 

Tasks

  • Liaison and management of national and international projects on sediment ecology
  • Dealing with national authorities and knowledge of legal and operational obligates within the framework of European and national directives
  • Supervision and maintenance of the necessary scientific equipment on RV Mya 2 (e.g. multibeam echo sounder, ADCP, CTD, etc.)
  • Support of external users and visiting researchers on Mya 2 (incl. during cruises)
  • It is expected that you are actively involved in the acquisition of third-party funding to upgrade to a full position.

Requirements

  • PhD degree and work experience in the Geology, Geophysics or other Geosciences
  • Very good knowledge of hydroacoustic measurement techniques and coastal sediment dynamics
  • Very good computer and software skills (special software for acquisition and postprocessing of hydroacoustic data, Geographic Information Systems as well as standard operating systems)
  • Fluency of the English and German languages
  • the willingness and ability to participate in ship expeditions

This is a part-time position (19,5h), limited to 3 years with the potential to become a permanent employment. Tenure time can be shortened depending on the candidate’s degree of qualification. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13. The place of employment will be Sylt.
