If you want to start a scientific carrier and contribute to the continued development of sustainable and cost-efficient end-of-pipe technologies in freshwater and saltwater recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), this is an opportunity for you. At DTU Aqua we are focusing on methods that ensure resource recovery and minimal environmental impact, allowing the transition of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS to a more sustainable and circular economy strategy. To achieve this, our research within end-of-pipe treatment treats waste streams from aquaculture with emphasis on nitrogen, phosphorous and organic matter removal. In this PhD, different cost-effective technologies and holistic strategies for valorizing and downstreaming waste from RAS with a focus on circular economy will be investigated. Specifically, new innovative methods for phosphorous recovery, carbon sources for denitrification, organic coagulants, and dewatering technologies for organic matter treatment and transport.

Responsibilities and qualifications

You will be involved in a collaborative research project involving several European research institutions. Your main role will be to design and conduct research on the topic in our facilities in Hirtshals. This involves practical experiments in lab-scale and industrial RAS, as well as laboratory analysis and studies aimed to develop cost-efficient end-of-pipe technologies in freshwater and saltwater RAS, ensuring resource recovery and minimal environmental impact. In addition, you will participate in other ongoing related research activities in the Section for Aquaculture.

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. Ideally, you have a degree in Engineering, Biochemistry, or Biotechnology preferably with a specialization in biorefinery, water treatment, or similar.

Our ideal candidate

  • Possesses scientific curiosity and is eager to test hypotheses to advance current knowledge
  • Has previous experience in experimental work with down streaming or water treatment
  • Has an interest in circular economy concept applied to aquaculture
  • Is interested in RAS and practical application of the results achieved
  • Has a keen interest in laboratory analysis and development of methods
  • Shows proficiency in written and spoken English, and a determination for disseminating your work
