The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research GmbH (www.leibniz-zmt.de) is an independent research and teaching institute that provides scientific knowledge for the protection and sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems. The Office for Knowledge Exchange is looking for a Data Analyst (gn), (part-time, 15%) (Reference: 7-PARAWET) to engage with geodata analyses and capacity development tasks associated to the PARAWET-Peru (Participatory monitoring, assessment and visualisation of climate change vulnerability in coastal wetlands of Peru for decision-making in Ecosystem-based adaptation) project.

The position is to be filled from March 2023 until the end of July 2024

Description of the Project:

The main objective of the ZMT’s PARAWET-Peru project is to improve the flow of environmental information produced by different governmental sectors in Peru for decision making. PARAWET supports national research institutions in the collection, interpretation and communication of information about climate change relevant, ecological and socio-economic information of coastal and marine zones. In the framework of the project, the ZMT provides support to Peruvian partners in the elaboration of a Digital Marine Atlas supported by the “Coastal Marine Atlas” project which is led by AFIMC (Functional Area of Coastal Marine Research) of IMARPE (“Instituto del Mar del Perú”). The Marine Atlas is a geoportal distributed online to make scientific spatial data transparent and easily available. This tool will be important for the timely dissemination of information to private sectors and the public for the management of marine resources and associated ecosystems.

Your tasks:

The data analyst will support PARAWET with the integration of datasets in the Digital Marine Atlas and to enhance the capacities of IMARPE and other interested organizations to visualize geospatial information for coastal ecosystem management in Peru. The incumbent will support with guiding documentation for continuous maintenance of the Marine Atlas. The data analyst will work closely with partners from IMARPE and the GIZ’s EbAMar (Ecosystem-based adaptation measures for integrated coastal and marine zone management) project. The tasks will be implemented in cooperation with the ZMT’s Office for Knowledge Exchange.

Requirements:

  • Master’s or PhD Degree in computer science, environmental science or a related field of study (e.g. geoinformatics, geography, sustainable development)
  • Experience in working with Geographical Information Systems (ArcGIS), in data and information visualisation and management
  • Experience in working with Python in ArcGIS
  • Experience in the engagement of stakeholders and participatory research
  • Experience in training and capacity transfer
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Spanish
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills

Details:

The position should be filled from 01.03.2023. The position is limited to the duration of the PARAWET- Peru Project until 31.07.2024. Salary will be paid according to the German TV-L EG 13 (15%).
