About the role

We seek a talented and enthusiastic scientist to join the vibrant Marine Systems Modelling group at NOC in Southampton, UK.

The successful candidate will join a world-leading interdisciplinary research team focusing on societal impacts of climate change on the marine environment and economies and societies dependent upon it. The mission of the team is to model what matters most for today’s scientific and policy questions: from the coast to the open ocean, from the ocean’s surface to the deep sea, from physics to plankton to fish to people. The successful candidate will work with developing global-scale climate change impact and risk indicators relevant to living marine resources, marine food security and the blue economy.

This is a fixed term appointment, initially available for 3 years. The NOC is a strategic research organisation that takes a long-term view when recruiting. While this is a fixed term appointment we regularly extend or convert to permanent appointments subject to funding and operational requirements.

 

About you

The successful candidate will have research experience, and ideally a publication record, in the area of analysing and/or developing global economic and/or environmental data sets and models, environmental/marine economics or econometrics. Advanced data processing and visualization skills (e.g. Matlab, Python, R, or STATA) are essential for this role, with an emphasis on global geographical data sets. We especially welcome candidates with experience and interest in the following areas:

  • valuing natural resources such as global marine fisheries; evaluating ecosystem services, and quantifying ocean wealth
  • methods to incorporating nature into financial decision-making
  • using/developing models that link economies, societies, and nature such as integrated assessment models, general or partial equilibrium models

This is a research-focused role, and the key outputs are expected to be lead author scientific publications. Thus, the ideal candidate must evidence advanced research writing skills (academic papers and/or commissioned reports).

They will have a strong 1st degree in an economic or mathematics discipline and have completed a PhD in a numerate environmental economics. A PhD-equivalent experience can be considered as two lead author academic papers or commissioned research-based reports. They will have excellent communication, oral, written and presentational skills.

This position will be based in Southampton. The centre is well connected by public transport and has ample cycle parking in addition to free onsite car-parking.
