The Institute of Geosciences at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel opens the following position, available as of Jan 1st, 2022

Scientific Assistant – PostDoc Coastal Geology / Sedimentology / Morphodynamics

‍for an initial period of three years. An extension of the contract for another three years with the aim of habilitation is possible within the regulations of the German Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz. The regular weekly working time is that of a full-time employee (currently 38.7 hours). The salary is based on the relevant requirements up to pay group 14 TV-L. The amount of the teaching hours will be based on the relevant regulation (Lehrverpflichtungsordnung).

The research of the working group Coastal Geology and Sedimentology aims at an interdisciplinary understanding of sediment transport processes. We look at coastal systems and depositional environments and analyze the shaping processes to evaluate conditions, explain past changes, and predict future developments under different forcing conditions. Process-oriented studies span a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, from small-scale flocculation processes, turbulence, and particle property analysis to mesoscale dynamics of landforms and large-scale, geologic evolution of coastal landscapes. To this end, we use a synthesis of field observational data, laboratory experiments, and numerical model simulations.

The topic of scientific investigations and the orientation of teaching within this qualification position are geological, sedimentological and morphodynamic processes in coastal areas. Emphasis may be placed on the development and application of numerical models and/or on land- and ship-based measurements. The development of an own research profile within the topics of the working group is required.

‍Your profile:

  • PhD degree in a geoscientific, engineering or similar field of study on a topic connected to above themes,
  • Fundamental knowledge on sedimentology and sediment transport processes.
  • Experience in the development and application of model systems and relevant software.
  • Experience in planning and conducting land-based and/or ship-based measurement campaigns.
  • Ability to teach in BSc and MSc programs in English and German language at the Institute of Geosciences.

We welcome your application regardless of your age, gender, cultural and social background, religion, ideology, disability or sexual identity. We promote gender equality. We expressly welcome people with a migration background to apply to us. Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel is committed to the employment of people with disabilities: Applications from disabled persons and their equals will be given preferential consideration if suitable.

The university strives to increase the proportion of female scientists in research and teaching and therefore strongly encourages suitably qualified women to apply. Women will be given priority in the case of equivalent suitability, aptitude and professional performance.

Applications with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications, research concept with concrete ideas for research activities, copies of academic certificates, contact information of 2 referees) should be sent by e-mail as a single PDF document by 15.11.2021 to: Prof. Dr. Christian Winter, christian.winter@ifg.uni-kiel.de
