Postdoc (m/f/d) Climate modelling and model output analysis

Bewerbungsschluss: August 25th 2020

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Marine Meteorology of the research division Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics is offering a position as

Postdoc
Climate modelling and model output analysis

starting on 1st October 2020. Earlier or later start can be considered.

Job description:

The main duty are research tasks involving climate modelling and model output analysis focussed on the ‘role of the ocean for driving extreme events in the climate system of the northern hemisphere’.  This position is part of the large-scale project ROADMAP (Role of ocean dynamics and Ocean-Atmosphere interactions in Driving cliMAte variations and future Projections of impact-relevant extreme events) running over the period 2020-2023. Together with GEOMAR further research institutes from 7 European countries participate in this project. The main aim of ROADMAP is a better understanding of the influence of oceanic processes on atmospheric extreme events on the northern hemisphere, especially in the European region. Specifically, the role of the oceanic surface temperature, sea ice cover, and ocean circulation for the atmospheric circulation and resulting extreme events is to be investigated. For this purpose, a combination of observational and climate model data will be utilized.

One task of you will be: Modelling and analysing a coupled climate model, that has a high-resolution (1/10°), eddy-resolving, ‘nest’ in the North Atlantic region. Furthermore, ‘pacemaker’ experiments with prescribed wind-stress, and simulations of the high-resolution OpenIFS atmosphere model and the coupled FOCI-OpenIFS model will be analysed. You will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Mojib Latif and Prof. Dr. Joakim Kjellsson.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in natural sciences (e.g., oceanography, meteorology, physics)
  • Knowledge in dynamics of the atmosphere and the oceans, and in atmosphere-ocean interactions with publication records
  • Experience with OpenIFS or NEMO desirable
  • Programming skills and experience with super-computing systems (e.g., Fortran, Unix/Linux, MPI, HPCs)
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Fluency in English

The position is available for 3 years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tarif for public employees. This is a full-time position and it can be split; flexible working time models are generally possible. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).
