We seek two postdoctoral fellows to join our speleothem research team at the ICCP in Busan, South Korea. The two 2-year postdoctoral fellow positions are funded as part of the IBS Young Scientist Fellowship grant to Dr. Jasper A. Wassenburg. The successful candidates will be working with speleothems from the East Asian Monsoon region with a focus on South Korea. The key objectives of the project are to reconstruct the isotope composition of fossil rainfall from the western North Pacific and reconstruct seasonality by means of speleothem fluid inclusion isotope analysis over the last 125,000 years on the Korean Peninsula. Combined fluid inclusion isotopes, clumped isotope analysis and TEX86 will be used to reconstruct absolute cave air temperatures. Furthermore, the research team will be experimenting with a novel setup to achieve high precision 17O-excess values from speleothem fluid inclusions. The project also involves 230Th/U dating, cave monitoring, carbonate δ13C, δ18O, trace element analysis and climate modeling.
Applicants should have a PhD in Earth Sciences, Geology, Physical Geography, Physics or similar. A strong background in speleothem science, excellent lab and writing skills, fluency in English, and basic knowledge on isotope fractionation are required. Experience with speleothem fluid inclusions is an advantage but not a requirement.

The IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP) directed by Prof. Dr. Axel Timmermann, is dedicated to advancing the understanding of natural climate variability, man-made climate change and their impacts on the hydrological cycle, regional processes, ice-sheets, and sea level. The ICCP is generously funded through the Institute for Basic Science (IBS)Â and its facilities include the super computer Aleph, a MAT253+ with Kiel device, Los Gatos water isotope analyzer, wire saw and micromill. A Picarro L2140i will be installed in November 2021 and will be used for fluid inclusion isotope analysis.
