Job description

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany. It is one of the premier climate science research institutes in the world. Located in the heart of one of Europe’s most livable and vibrant cities, it provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment to conduct scientific research as well as access to state-of-the-art scientific facilities. You can also have a virtual tour to our campus. The MPI-M is now opening a three-year (36 months) position for Postdoctoral | Research Scientist, in the Horizon Europe project WorldTrans – Transparent Assessments for Real People (Grant Agreement 101081661). WorldTrans is designed to address four specific objectives: (1) to build new communities of integrated assessment modeling experts and users (citizens and stakeholders alike), based on a transparent approach to integrated assessments, (2) to unpack and quantify the potential importance of including heterogeneous human behavior in integrated assessment models, (3) to identify main feedback loops and policy leverage points for climate-neutrality oriented policies, and (4) to produce quantitatively consistent results for various assessment processes including all three working groups of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). MPI-M’s contribution to WorldTrans is the inclusion and improvement of processes and feedbacks in natural systems. The work will conduct large ensembles of dedicated CO2 emissions-driven simulations enabling the interactive carbon cycle using Max Planck Institute Earth System Models (MPI-ESM) and will foster research in large-scale carbon and energy cycles and relationships to tipping points and irreversibility. The work will be embedded in the development of a new system dynamics-based Integrated Assessment Model (FRIDA) in an international collaboration of top institutions in Europe.

The successful candidate will be part of the director’s research group in the department “The Ocean in the Earth System”. The mission of the research group is to understand the dynamics and climate impacts of large-scale ocean variability and climate change. The research group applies theory and model systems of various complexity, ranging from Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) and conceptual models to general circulation and Earth System Models (ESMs) in idealised and realistic set-ups at various resolutions.

YOUR TASKS

  • Set up and running of large ensembles of dedicated CO2 emissions-driven simulations enabling the interactive carbon cycle with the state-of-the-art MPI-ESM
  • Explore the nonlinear response of the carbon cycle and ocean circulation in low, moderate, and high-overshoot emissions pathways from large-ensemble simulations
  • Disseminate the results through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences
  • Explore the changes of climate extremes and their impacts on economic damage
  • Conceptualize the nonlinear behavior of the two key climate cycles of carbon and energy in a form suitable for implementation in the Integrated Assessment Model FRIDA
  • Active support of model development of FRIDA
  • Contribute to project reports, to communicate and cooperate with other project partners

YOUR PROFILE

  • PhD in physical oceanography, meteorology, marine science, environmental sciences, or a similar discipline obtained by the starting date
  • Knowledge about and experience with high-performance computer and supercomputer simulations with state-of-the-art ESMs would be desirable
  • Knowledge about and experience with running and evaluation of climate simulations would be desirable
  • Expertise in analysis and evaluation of large ensembles of experiments generated by ESMs
  • Expertise in climate and carbon interactions
  • High skills in writing scientific publications
  • Solid skills in Unix / Linux, Fortran, Python, CDO, shell scripting, processing, and visualization of simulation data
  • Ability to work both in a team and autonomously
  • Very good spoken and written English language for communication within the group and project partners and for the presentation of scientific results in international conferences are required

OUR OFFER

  • Participation in a challenging part of science in an international, intellectually stimulating environment
  • Access to complex workflows on the bleeding edge of what is technologically possible, as well as working for and with an open source community
  • Very good opportunities for self-realization, freedom in and influence upon the decisions what to do, and how to do it
  • Excellent opportunities for further (self-)training and development, self-organized and/or in external courses and events, including supervisory experience
  • A network of very experienced and innovative colleagues within the institute, and at project partner institutions with a long-proven tradition of sharing knowledge and information
  • Possibility for flexible time management and measures to support work-life balance
  • Attractive subsidy for job ticket in Hamburg (HVV-ProfiTicket)

Candidates will be evaluated based on their qualifications and ability to fulfill the responsibilities as outlined for this project. Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions depending on qualification (E 14 TVöD), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and those of the German civil service. The position is in principle full-time. However, part-time applications can be considered.

The position is offered with a starting date of April 1st, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. The Max Planck Society strives to ensure gender equality and diversity and, furthermore, seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
