GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. The “Seafloor Modeling Group” of the research division “Dynamics of the Ocean Floor” is offering a Postdoc in modeling hydrothermal systems on slow-spreading ridges, starting on as soon as possible.

She/he/they will join an international and diverse team of researchers using numerical methods in combination with seafloor observations to investigate the formation and evolution of the ocean floor, its role in the earth system, and the responsible use of energetic and mineral resources on the seabed.

The position is offered within an industry funded research project on understanding fault-controlled hydrothermal systems on slow-spreading ridges. The successful candidate will work on building geomodels that integrate diverse geological and geophysical datasets into a joint visualization framework using paraview, on exploring multi-phase behavior using an equation-of-state for the system H2O-NaCl, and on simulating hydrothermal flow at fault-controlled hydrothermal systems on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and possibly on Mohn’s Ridge using our openFoam-based flow models.

Your responsibilities

  • Work with our academic and industry partners in Norway and Switzerland on fault-controlled hydrothermal systems on slow-spreading ridges
  • Develop and apply hydrothermal transport models using openFoam
  • Work on frameworks for model – data integration
  • Communicate with partners across institutional and disciplinary boundaries

Your qualification

  • PhD in a relevant field (geosciences, applied mathematics, physics)
  • Background in marine geodynamics/geology/geophysics
  • Experience in modeling hydrothermal systems or background geophysical fluid dynamics including programming skills (C/C++, Python, or Julia)
  • Convincing publication record
  • Beneficial skills include:
    • Mid-ocean ridge science background
    • openFoam modeling and programming skills
    • Background in lithosphere dynamics
    • Background in multi-phase flows

The position is available for a funding period of 19 months. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position and cannot be split. Flexible working time models are possible.
