At the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), a 3-year Post Dr. position is available for work with ploidy and inheritance genetics of salmonids. The position will be linked to a NFR project addressing the production-related challenges of triploid Atlantic salmon, primarily developmental genetics, inbreeding and aberrant inheritance in triploid fish. The position is affiliated with the research group Population Genetics and is  based in Bergen.

About our research group and our work

Our work in the  Population Genetics group is tightly linked to the Institute of Marine Research’s overall vision of providing knowledge that will form the foundation for long-term and sustainable resource use in the marine environment, including the interaction between aquaculture and the environment. We deliver research and advice of high professional international quality and our group consists of around 35 employees, of which approx. 20 has a workplace in Bergen.

Main tasks

  • Sampling of biological experiments producing and investigating performance and welfare of diploid, triploid, “failed-triploid”, gynogenetic and tetraploid salmon
  • Laboratory and statistical analyses with various genetic markers to identify pedigree, ploidy and aberrant inheritance patterns etc.
  • Planning and execution of these biological experiments
  • Data analysis, interpretation, presentation and publication of results

Qualifications:

We are therefore looking for someone

  • with a PhD in genetics, genomics, developmental genetics, or similar field
  • able to document direct experience with handling and statistical analysis of genetic and/or genomic data
  • publication in international, peer-reviewed journals.

The working language at the IMR is Norwegian, and good communication skills in Norwegian will be beneficial for both the applicant and the IMR. Sufficient progression in learning to speak and write Norwegian is expected during the first two years of employment. If necessary, language training will be offered and costs incurred will be reimbursed based upon completion of the language courses.

Desired competencies

The ideal candidate has

  • direct experience of developmental genetics especially with respect to ploidy and/or (mis-)inheritance issues in general.
  • experience in performing biological experiments with fish and knowledge of salmon
