The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) in Iceland is seeking a physical oceanographer for a full-time position.

‍The MFRI is seeking to hire a physical oceanographer with expertise in observational physical oceanography. The successful candidate will join a group of scientists who work on oceanographic monitoring and research with focus on the dynamic ocean region surrounding Iceland. The candidate will take an active part in various oceanographic research projects and tasks at the MFRI. This includes analysis of data collected through long-term monitoring and other datasets to address a variety of scientific problems in ocean and climate dynamics. The job also involves collection of new data through participation in cruises on board research vessels, work with data from moorings and a variety of other oceanographic research that leads to the creation of new knowledge. The candidate will also work with an interdisciplinary research team to further understand ecosystem-climate interactions.

Overview of projects and responsibilities:

  • The candidate will participate in various research projects in the fields of oceanography and ecology.
  • Collection and processing of data on the marine environment.
  • Participation in cruises on board research vessels.
  • Publication of results in scientific journals, reports and in presentations.

The skills we’re looking for:

  • PhD in physical oceanography or related disciplines.
  • Experience in research in the field of physical oceanography      or related disciplines.
  • Previous publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Ambition, initiative, and a positive attitude.
  • Excellent ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, with oral and written communication skills.

Further information

Full time position. Salary is according to the current collective wage and salary agreement between the Icelandic Union of natural scientists (FÍN) and Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs.
