The research unit Marine Meteorology of the research division Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics is offering a position as PhD student renewable power in climate change, starting as soon as possible. The position offers the possibility to obtain a doctoral degree in natural sciences.

We are looking for an enthusiastic employee for the fundamental research on meteorological extremes affecting the production of renewable power from wind and solar energy. The aim of this project is to better understand changes of weather conditions under global warming that lead to extremes in renewable power production. A focus of the research project will be on changes in storms and doldrums in a warming world. The project will be supervised by the leader of the research unit.

The research unit Maritime Meteorology works on quantifying and better understanding the relative importance of atmospheric and oceanic processes in controlling climate variability and change on a large range of timescales: from hourly, through decadal, to centennial and millennial timescales.  The research unit offers a young and dynamic team, an internationally active working environment, the possibility to be part of academic teaching, support on technical questions and arrangements for a flexible work-live balance. Kiel and the surrounding region have with the proximity to the Baltic Sea many offers for recreation and leisure, plus a cultural scene shaped by the university and water sports.

Job Description

  • Fundamental research on extremes in renewable power production from the meteorological perspective
  • Scientific analysis of big data sets from observations and atmospheric models, including machine learning for pattern detection and classification
  • Graphical display of the results
  • Scientific publication of the results as journal article
  • Presentations at international conferences of the field
  • Performing experiments with complex models on high-performance computers
  • Participation in training courses
  • Qualification for a PhD degree

Qualification

  • Very good master degree in Physics, Meteorology, Climate Sciences, Informatics, or similar
  • An excellent physical understanding of weather and climate, knowledge about atmospheric dynamics, renewable energy, climate change, weather- and climate modelling, and/or meteorological observations desirable
  • Very good programming skills (python, shell scripts, FORTRAN and/or comparable), programming experience desirable
  • Interest in using methods of machine learning and high performance-computing, knowledge and first experience desirable
  • Very good English skills, German is a plus but not mandatory
  • Good presentation skills and the willingness for inter-/national travel
  • Ability to work in teams and alone, interest in developing skills

The position is available for a funding period for three years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a part-time position according to 75 % of a full-time equivalent. The position can not be split. Flexible working time models are generally possible. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).
