The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine  Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded  by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine  research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography,  geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary  approaches to scientific goals.

Background

Aquaculture has been identified as a gateway for antibiotic resistance (AR) spread, and the coastal areas used for oyster aquaculture are often contaminated by AR determinants (antibiotics, resistance genes, and resistant bacteria) and other pollutants. AR transmission to humans and other species threatens the safety of coastal marine systems, the sustainability of shellfish farming and human health. In a collaboration between Delphine Destoumieux-Garzon (CNRS, Montpellier, F), Karl André (IRTA, Tarragona, E), Luigi Vezulli (Uni Genova, I), Gianluca Corno (CNR, Verbania, I) and Mathias Wegner (AWI, D) the JPI Aquatic pollutants funded project SPARE-SEA investigates the cumulative effects of human use of coastal ecosystems along multiple gradients (e.g oyster farming intensity and agrochemical pollutant run-off) on the enrichment of AR in the oyster bio-reactor and its subsequent transfer routes within anthroposized coastal environments.

  • Expertise in the microbial ecology (especially antibiotic resistance and/or host associated microbiome)•
  • Experience in conducting enrichment experiments on different scales (micro – mesocosm)
  • Experience with statistics and bioinformatics
  • Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written)
