Who are we?

We are the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) – the UK’s centre of excellence for oceanographic sciences. We are a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean.

We are made up of a dynamic and vibrant community whose focus is on improving the world in which we live. Our work is balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviours and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one NOC’ approach.

We have a rich history dating back to 1949, and our future has never looked more exciting as we aim to be the world’s most innovative oceanographic institution.

About the role

An exciting opportunity has opened up to support the expanding portfolio of NOC research projects which examine the biogeochemistry of carbon in coastal and open ocean environments. This role will augment the Ocean BioGeochemistry team and support the research group of Dr Claire Evans. The post will be primarily dedicated to supporting ongoing work in the Malaysian coastal zone, but the successful candidate will be required to work on a variety of biogeochemical projects, as and when required. The focus will be on understanding how both anthropogenic and natural processes drive carbon cycling in a variety of marine habitats, and thereby helping to determine how these can be managed, or informing models for predicting how these habitats might change under future scenarios. The impact of terrestrial and marine anthropogenic activities, the role of coastal vegetated habitats, as well as processes in seawater will all be examined. The successful candidate will be required to participate in field and laboratory work, and to conduct biochemical analyses of collected samples via techniques such as Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometry. The role may also require the application of assays to determine rates of prokaryotic production and respiration to establish the bioavailability of organic matter. We offer a unique opportunity to work in close partnership with those who govern, manage and use the coast, thus building the successful candidate’s network and awareness of the associated policy and socioeconomic landscape.

About you

We seek a researcher who has, or is about to be awarded with, a PhD in a relevant field. The candidate will participate in field campaigns, both in the UK and overseas, to collect samples in a variety of habitats, including coastal vegetation. Competency in analytical biogeochemistry is required, as the position requires accurate sample processing and analysis using approaches such as Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, although full training and support will be provided. Previous experience of conducting assays to determine processes such as prokaryotic respiration would be a distinct advantage. A willingness to participate in fieldwork is essential, as is an ability to swim and participate in sediment core collection. Diving qualifications are not necessary. You will have a publication record appropriate to your career stage. We seek a highly self-motivated candidate who prioritizes excellence in balance with the need to meet deadlines, and who works successfully as part of team, as well as possessing the initiative to function independently when required. An ability to see the bigger picture and work across a variety of projects is essential. Finally, enthusiasm and skills in engaging a diverse range of stakeholders would be beneficial.
