Purpose:

You will identify Eocene invertebrates from Seymour Island, Antarctica, to quantify the composition of  greenhouse (warm period – Eocene) sea floor communities. Data collection will be undertaken via fieldwork and  through study of fossil collections at BAS. The samples will be added to a database and curated in the BAS fossil  collection. You will identify key trophic relationships which define the communities, carry out food web analyses,  and analyses of benthic community composition (taxonomic composition, ecological traits e.g. predator/prey  ratios). You will also determine taphonomic (preservation) indices for the greenhouse community. In addition,  you will carry out high resolution stable isotope sclerochronology (δ18O and δ13C of shelly material) to provide  an understanding of climate and seasonality in the warm Eocene and cool Oligocene time periods. You will  publish papers on their results, actively pursue your own ideas and funding and supervise students.

Duties:

  • Identify Eocene invertebrates with a high-level of taxonomic precision
  • Assemble a key dataset that will form the basis of research papers
  • Database taxonomic information and carry out specimen curation
  • To disseminate research to both academic and non-academic audiences (including public  engagement e.g. at the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival), contribute to the external visibility of BAS.
  • Independently carry out δ18O and δ13C isotopic analyses from Ecoene and Oligocene  specimens at the NERC istope facility
  • Lead publications on their results.
  • Develop their own ideas and apply for their own funding to continue studies.
  • Supervise students
  • Undertake other duties as appropriate as requested by the BAS Director.
