To encourage greater involvement of young scientists in international scientific investigations and to foster their role in the management and stewardship of the marine environment, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) are proud to announce the fourth Early Career Scientist Conference in May 2022 hosted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Building a network of peers is invaluable

Through this conference, early career scientists will have the opportunity to meet colleagues from around the globe who share similar interests and an enthusiasm to improve equality and diversity in marine science. The conference aims to foster the development of contacts, collaborations, and associations among early career scientists that will persist for decades, and to establish personal and institutional networks that will help to advance our understanding of the marine environment.

The theme, Ocean sciences for the future we want, links to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 and the important role early career scientists play in the current and future health of our oceans and coasts for the benefit of humanity.

This is the fourth conference of this series builds on the success of previous events in the USA (2007), Spain (2012), and South Korea (2017).

ICES and PICES welcome you into their community!

Who can participate? An early career scientist must – at the time of the event in 2022 – be 35 years of age or younger or have finished a PhD no earlier than 2017.

Limited travel funding will be available to participants.
Further details will be announced soon.
