In June 2024, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy released the U.S. National Ocean Biodiversity Strategy, creating the opportunity to transform how we measure and manage diverse ocean life and habitats. In this virtual panel, lead authors of the Strategy and the Lenfest-supported project, Marine Biodiversity Dialogues, will bring together knowledge holders from three regions – the Chesapeake Bay, Gulf of Mexico, and the Puget Sound – to discuss the essential ingredients and on-the-ground partnerships necessary to make implementation of the Strategy effective on behalf of communities.
Hosted by the Lenfest Ocean Program, the panel will be introduced by Dr. Emmett Duffy, Smithsonian Institution and Gabrielle Canonico, U.S. Marine Biodiversity Observation Network, NOAA, and moderated by Kelsi Furman, Smithsonian Institution.
Panel:
- Tiara Thomas, Accokeek Foundation/Piscataway Conoy Tribe, Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs
- Philip Plack, Annapolis Oyster Company, Maryland
- Richard Rutland, Cold Blooded Fishing, Alabama
- Scott Banon, Alabama Marine Resources Division
- Jodie Toft, Puget Sound Restoration Fund, Washinton State
This panel is only the beginning, during the event hosts and organizers will discuss future steps to deepen engagement across different communities.
