The concept, “The Invisible Walls: Where Oceans Refuse to Mix”, explores the science behind ocean water mass boundaries and why these transition zones matter so much more than they’re given credit for. From the acoustics of narrow straits and what that means for marine mammal communication, to the behavioural adaptations of species like the orcas of the Strait of Gibraltar, to the very real environmental pressures of heavy maritime traffic through these critical chokepoints… there’s a lot of genuinely important science to bring together here.
FMS is looking for a Topic Editor, candidates would be researchers working across physical oceanography, marine biology, acoustics, or marine conservation… anyone with an interest in ocean boundary zones, straits, or the ecological pressures of maritime traffic would be a great fit!
