Project Title: Testing key uncertainties for monkfish assessment and management using management
strategy evaluations (Marine Institute Cullen Fellowship)

Funding Agency: Marine Institute

Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and strongly motivated graduate
to undertake a PhD as part of a collaboration between GMIT and the Marine Institute.

Monkfish are among the most valuable species caught by the Irish fishing industry. Key uncertainties such
as species identification in the catch, discard estimation, ageing and combined-species total allowable
catches represent significant challenges to assessing and sustainably managing monkfish stocks. This PhD
aims to test the performance of stock assessment methods to deliver robust management advice in the face
of these uncertainties. A primary framework will be Management Strategy Evaluation conditioned on best
understanding of the species biology and fisheries.

The Cullen Fellow will benefit from: advanced training in statistical modelling, stock assessment and
high-performance simulation from experts at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and the Marine
Institute. Interaction with stakeholders will improve the quality and relevance of the products and develop
the Fellow’s understanding of the critically important feedback between scientific advice and
management. Opportunities to present their work directly into the ICES advisory process via presentations
to national and international meetings will be provided. The candidate will gain highly relevant experience
in the assessment and advisory process which will strengthen future job opportunities.
