An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and strongly motivated graduate to undertake a PhD as part of a collaboration between GMIT and the Marine Institute. Monkfish are among the most valuable species caught by the Irish fishing industry. Key uncertainties such as species identification in the catch, discard estimation, ageing and combined-species total allowable catches represent significant challenges to assessing and sustainably managing monkfish stocks. This PhD aims to test the performance of stock assessment methods to deliver robust management advice in the face of these uncertainties.
