Post-Doctoral Researcher Position:
Physiological ecology of fishes in a thermally extreme environment
New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is a research university with a fully
integrated liberal arts and science college.  It draws students from around
the world, and prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of our
interconnected world.
NYUAD is seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Researcher who will study the
physiological responses of fishes from a thermally stressful environment.
NYUAD is located on the shores of the Persian/Arabian Gulf, where marine
fauna experience extreme annual temperature ranges (20 ?C) and maxima (36
?C), making it an interesting natural laboratory in which to investigate
climate change related questions. As a primary component of their research,
the post-doctoral researcher will be responsible to design and implement
multi-species, multi-parameter studies of the physiological ecology of
fishes from this thermally extreme environment. The Post-Doctoral
Researcher will be expected to conduct novel laboratory and field studies
to advance scientific knowledge in this field and develop our understanding
of the biology of fishes in this region. Published research experience in
the thermal physiology of fishes is required, ideally focused on
cardiovascular function and linking physiological and ecological
The Post-Doctoral Researcher will work in the NYUAD marine biology
laboratory under the supervision of Dr. John Burt (link
and will be partially supervised by Dr. Holly Shiels at the University of
Post-Doctoral Researcher would join a diverse research group studying
various aspects of coral reef biology, and would be encouraged to develop
collaborative research agendas with high-impact researchers outside of the
To be successful in this role you must possess the following essential
– PhD in Biology, Marine Biology or equivalent [only those with PhDs
completed by April 2017 can be considered]
– A strong publication record with first-author experience
– Dive certification from an accredited agency (PADI, BSAC or similar
– Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with external
stakeholders, employees, management and students.
Desirable experience/qualifications:
– Experience with a wide suite of thermally-related physiological research
in fishes (cardiac physiology, respirometry, physiologically-related
swimming kinematics, molecular stress markers, etc)
– Experience conducting aquarium-based experiments on fishes, ideally in a
leadership role
– Experience working with multiple life-stages of fishes
– Experience integrating laboratory research with field
– Experience linking physiological and ecological performance
– Ability to conduct multiple, possibly divergent, research projects
– Ability to train and mentor junior technical staff
– Ability to plan, allocate, and monitor research budgets for projects
– Experience leading IRB/ethics/permit requests for research on vertebrates
– Valid driver?s license in home country
Hiring is contingent on successful clearance of security, health, and
reference checks, among other HR-related parameters. This will be a
two-year fixed term contract position, potentially renewable for an
additional year based on performance and funding availability. The position
is scheduled to begin September 2017, but the starting date may be extended
depending on the needs of a suitable candidate. Salary will be contingent

2017.  Applicants should create a single PDF file that includes a cover
letter (max 2 pages) that specifically refers to qualifications/experience
related to the items above, a curriculum vitae including the names and
contact information of three references, and copies of recent lead-author
publications.  Please email this application file to with
