The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) is an independent non-profit research foundation in Norway affiliated with the University of Bergen. The Center conducts multidisciplinary marine, cryosphere and atmospheric research with integration and links to modeling, data assimilation and service development.

A postdoctoral position is open in the framework of the EmblAUS project funded by the Nordic Countries Research Council Centre of Excellence EmblA.

NERSC invites applications from highly motivated candidates holding a PhD In Mathematics, with a strong background in statistics and probability and/or dynamical systems or more generally in applied mathematics.

The main focus of the research of the postdoc will be on developing
theoretical foundations for efficient particle filtering methods in
highly nonlinear and high dimensional data assimilation problems such as those encountered in geophysical applications. In particular, the postdoc will explore methods using the ideas related to the assimilation in unstable subspace within the particle filtering methodology.

Candidates with a strong theoretical background in data assimilation will be preferred. The appointment will be for one year initially, extendible to up to two years based on satisfactory performance. The position will be based at NERSC, Bergen, within the Data Assimilation group.

The postdoc will have the opportunity to visit the international
project collaborators:

Prof. C.K.R.T. Jones at University of North Carolina in the US, Prof. Bocquet at

École des Ponts ParisTech in France, and Prof. A. Apte at the
International Centre for Theoretical Science in India.
For an equal level of qualifications, female applicants will be given priority.
Salary follows the Norwegian Civil Service pay grades (57–?65) and willbe adjusted based on qualifications. The start–?up is expected the earliest but not later than September 2016.
