We are seeking a highly-motivated postdoctoral researcher to support the delivery of an innovative four-year EU-funded project aiming to characterize, conserve and exploit kelp genetic diversity; the GENIALG initiative will harness the power of high-throughput –omics (e.g. GWAS) to improve the genetic resources available to breeders for sustainable, large-scale kelp (Saccharina latissima) farming.
The successful applicant will join an internationally-reputed team of scientists specializing in brown algal genomics and host pathogen interactions. They will play a pivotal role in introducing agrigenomics strategies based on marker-assisted selection to improve kelp varieties. The main duties are: to sample, characterize and biobank kelp genetic diversity across European waters with the support of the Culture Collection for Algae and Protozoa; develop and improve high-throughput assays to quantify disease resistance and other biotic stressors; organize and deploy a disease monitoring program across the production line (from hatchery to open sea); assist other sites within the consortium with disease diagnostics and help coordinate efforts across the consortium. It is not essential to demonstrate experience in all areas initially, but the ideal candidate must show genuine enthusiasm and ability to expand their boundaries.
