Postdoctoral Research Associate in Physical Oceanography/Remote Sensing

The Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography/Center for Marine Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position in Physical Oceanography/Remote Sensing within the SOCON Program (Sustained Ocean Color Observation with Nanosatellites –  http://www.uncw.edu/socon). UNCW has entered into a  PUBLIC/PRIVATE/FEDERALpartnership funded by Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation as a technology demonstration and “proof-of-concept” for development of a low-cost, high resolution, miniaturized multispectral ocean color imager (HawkEye) capable of flight on a CubeSat (SeaHawk) as a “game-changer” in the collection and dissemination ocean color data via nanosatellites.  The incumbent will become a member of the management, flight and science teams, working closely with the NASA Ocean Color Program on processing, distribution and archival of the imagery, and will have the opportunity to use these data in support of their own research interests. The SOCON team has completed the sensor development and is in the process of construction of 2 prototype CubeSats. The first is scheduled for launch in Q3 2018 with the second to follow within 6-months to a year.

We are seeking an outstanding scientist with a recent doctorate in marine science, remote sensing, or a closely related field with a research focus on remote sensing of physical processes within the ocean and/or physical-biological interactions in coastal or mid-ocean ecosystems. Program management experience desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a vigorous research program and will have the opportunity to gain experience teaching within UNCW’s undergraduate and graduate programs in physical oceanography. This is a full time, benefits-earning time limited 12-month position, with an initial funding period of three years (with annual review and possibility of renewal). For further information contact Dr. John M. Morrison at morrisonj@uncw.edu or (910) 962-2333. All application materials will be accepted online at Position Number 1505 (https://jobs.uncw.edu/postings/10441).
