We are seeking to recruit a Research Assistant to work as part of the Capturing our Coast (CoCoast) research team for the University of Portsmouth Southern regional hub. CoCoast is a national marine citizen science programme addressing questions on anthropogenic threats to intertidal community structure and biodiversity, engaging a unique network of volunteers (citizen scientists) in the data collection. The post holder will provide day-to-day field and laboratory support to the Portsmouth-based Senior Research Associate, and will be directly line managed by Dr Gordon Watson (PI). The Research Assistant can also benefit from a tailored Professional Development programme of marine-focused skills and training that aims to prepare the post-holder for employment in the marine sector after completion of the project.

Working with instruction from the Senior Research Associate, the Research Assistant will assist with volunteer training, information delivery to stakeholders, research, and analysing data. The successful candidate will have an appropriate degree qualification as well as knowledge and experience of coastal intertidal ecology and public engagement duties.

This post is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund. Willingness to work flexible hours (weekends and evenings) is essential.

The Southern regional hub post is based at the Institute of Marine Sciences, which is an internationally renowned marine centre providing research and teaching, supporting over 200 staff, undergraduates, and postgraduates, but with strong interdisciplinary links across the University, including the University of Portsmouth Environmental Network and the School of Biological Sciences. Portsmouth is a dynamic and innovative place to work and study and the University is committed to delivering an excellent student experience in conjunction with world-class research.

Applications must be made in accordance with the University of Portsmouth e-recruitment application process (https://port.engageats.co.uk/). Informal enquiries may be made by contacting Dr Gordon Watson (tel: 023 92845798, or email: gordon.watson@port.ac.uk).
