This position is part of the MarPipe EU ITN Consortium: Marine organisms have the capacity to produce a variety of biologically potent natural products, including antibiotic and anticancer compounds. MarPipe aims at further development of antimicrobial and anticancer lead compounds originating from marine bacteria and fungi, some obtained from deep-sea samples (5000m) collected in the sub-Antarctic.
Marie Skodowska-Curie ITN-ETN “MarPipe” Improving the flow in the pipeline of the next generation of marine biodiscovery scientists comprises a total of 11 research projects in the area of marine biodiscovery. MarPipe aims to discover and further develop lead compounds with anticancer and anti-infective activity that have already been identified by the consortium from extremophilic marine microorganisms. 7 academic, 3 industry and 1 not for profit beneficiaries will provide a unique training opportunity that will transfer key multidisciplinary and industry-relevant skills to 11 ESRs. Beneficiaries are located in 8 EU member states: IBP-CNR, Naples, Italy; Stazione Zoologica, Naples, Italy; University of Tromsø, Norway; University of Aberdeen, UK; GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany; KU Leuven, Belgium, University College Cork. Republic of Ireland, eCOAST, Ostend, Belgium; MEDINA, Grenada, Spain; MicroDish, Utrecht, The Netherlands; Italbiotec, Milan, Italy.
The successful candidate will be involved in all phases of the drug discovery pipeline, from isolation of new microbial strains to pre-clinical development of lead compounds. Importantly, you will also be trained to overcome existing bottlenecks in the field, e.g. low yields and low chemodiversity, isolation of known compounds, toxicity of compounds. You will be trained to become conscious of the socio-economic and policy context of their work, focusing on legal, policy, innovation and entrepreneurship themes. The project based in Aberdeen aims to obtain bioactive compounds from extremophile bacteria.
The successful candidate will have an MSc Degree or equivalent in Chemistry or a related chemical science and will satisfy the eligibility requirements for an Early Stage Researcher under the European Commission Horizon 2020 Early Stage Training Scheme; in particular, you should be eligible to be appointed as an Early Stage Researcher in the UK. This means:
You will have less than four years research experience and you must not possess a PhD. This 4 year period is measured from the date of obtaining the degree which would formally entitle to embark on a doctorate.
You must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than twelve months in the three years immediately prior to your recruitment.
Any appointment will be made subject to satisfactory references and a 12 month probation period.
As this post is funded by the European Commission it is available for 36 months or until 31 August 2020.
