The Oceanographic Observatory of Banyuls-sur-Mer (OOB) has a unique scientific profile and fosters an outstanding international environment. Research Units address basic research questions in marine sciences at the interfaces of oceanography, biogeochemistry, marine ecology, marine biology, developmental biology and biotechnology using biogeochemistry, functional genomics, bioinformatics, toxicology, microbiology, ecotoxicology, genetics and evolutionary biology. This institute is a working environment that favors rich exchanges and collaborations for multidisciplinary researches in marine environments. The OOB is part of a vibrant fundamental research community in marine biology and oceanography with the two other marine stations of the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Roscoff and Villefranche-sur-Mer. The OOB is also part of the EMBRC European Infrastructure that cluster 19 marine stations in 12 European countries. In addition to research, the OOB is strongly implicated in other missions such as teaching at national and international levels and long-term oceanographic time-series observations. It is also widely open to the public via a public aquarium and a botanical garden.
The OOB has openings for new independent group leaders. Talented scientists leading research falling within the scientific mission of the Observatory may apply to this call. Both young and established researchers are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have to secure a permanent research position in France through the usual channels, if this is not already the case, as well as external (competitive grants) project funding. The OOB provides laboratory space for teams up to 6-10 people.
The OOB is currently composed of 180 members with 4 research units housed in Banyuls-sur-Mer in the South of France (http://obs-banyuls.fr) within the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (the largest French University). OOB researchers have full access to state-of-the-art core services, including access to the sea, micro- and mesocosms platforms, aquarium facilities, molecular biology, imaging animal facilities, bioinformatics, mass spectrometry, cytometry, electron microscopy. The recruited PI will be integrated in one of the research units.
The OOB is actively seeking to increase the number of women team leaders and will particularly welcome applications from women scientists. In addition, research programs that can benefit from established facilities will be regarded with particular interest.
