Position Description:
This is a part-time (15 – 16 hours per week), temporary position through February 12, 2018.
This appointment may be extended or the hours increased to meet operational needs.
PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of the Chair for the CSUMB Research Diving Program, the Instructional Support Technician II (IST) provides instructional support services for the scientific diving program by providing materials, supplies, equipment, and related logistical support to lecture, laboratory, research or other activities. The IST has responsibility for providing support at the time and place appropriate to faculty and student needs and assists in ensuring the consistent, smooth day-to-day operations of the CSUMB Research Diving Program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Maintenance of active CSUMB scientific diver roster, including:
verification of training
status of all certifications (CPR, 1st Aid, Oxygen Administration)
status of dive physicals
verification of depth certification
verification of requisite dives per year
Maintains and further develops CSUMB scientific diver online dive log; tracks diver status according to items a-e listed above.
Maintains records of scientific diving equipment and materials issued and returned; prepares a variety of materials and equipment necessary for research diving classes; responsible for general upkeep (minor repair and maintenance) of scientific diving equipment
Tracks dive-related funds and/or accounts, including organization of incoming fees and outgoing expenses.
Supports Diving Safety Officer (DSO) and Dive Control Board with administrative tasks, such as the drafting of Letters of Reciprocity for program divers.
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: the principles of performing support services; knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline and the curriculum; knowledge of the materials and supplies in the curriculum and the curriculum and their uses.
Ability to: plan, organize, and schedule activities; ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline; ability to maintain records; ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned.
OR
Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
OR
Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
Required/Specialized Skills:
Thorough knowledge of: American Academy of Underwater Scientists (AAUS) scientific diving protocols and regulations; software packages, technologies and web-based tools used by the scientific diving program; experimental design and statistical analysis of SCUBA-derived data. Basic, Rescue, and AAUS Research Diver Certifications. CPR/First Aid/Oxygen certification from an accredited provider. Ability to: perform simple repairs to keep the equipment functioning or to identify malfunctions requiring technical repair; track incoming fees, funds and expenses. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above.
Preferred Qualifications:
Equivalent to a master’s degree from an accredited institution in marine science, marine biology, marine policy or a related discipline. Superior time management and organizational skills. Divemaster and Rescue Diver certification. Technical fluency with Banner, Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent enterprise information management system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.
Compensation and Benefits:
$21.62 – $ 35.09 per hour, with an anticipated hiring hour rate at or near entry level. The University Corporation at CSU Monterey Bay also provides access to affordable campus housing, Employee Housing.
