School of Biological Sciences, University of East Anglia.
Closing Date: 12 noon on 10 April 2017
This post is key to a NERC-funded multidisciplinary project designed to establish the key players in marine dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) cycling, the pathways used and methods to more effectively model environmental DMSP and dimethylsulfide (DMS) production. The postholder will be a highly experienced and motivated postdoctoral research scientist with an outstanding track record in molecular microbial ecology and biochemistry who will actively drive the research project, which is a collaboration between scientists at both the University of East Anglia and Plymouth Marine Lab.
Working with a dedicated technician at UEA, the postholder will investigate the microorganisms and the pathways used to synthesise and catabolise DMSP, an anti-stress molecule produced by many marine organisms and the main precursor for the climate-cooling gas dimethylsulfide (DMS). The postholder will be responsible for showing how seasonal environmental changes affect marine microbial community structure and the expression/diversity of the key DMSP cycling genes.
You will have a minimum of a PhD in Biological Sciences with a good publication record, experience in DNA/RNA isolation, ideally from environmental samples and be able to fulfil all essential elements of the person specification. The full time post is available from 1 May 2017 for a fixed term period until 30 April 2020.
Closing date: 12 noon on 10 April 2017.
