Call for applications to the Environmental Impact Assessment training course for exploration activities in the Area to be held at the ISA-Egypt Joint Training and Research Centre – Deadline 31 May 2024

The Secretariat of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is inviting interested candidates to apply to the upcoming training course on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for exploration activities carried out in the Area, organized in partnership with the ISA-Egypt Joint Training and Research Centre established by the ISA Assembly in July 2023.

The course will be held from 14 to 26 September 2024 in Alexandria, Egypt. It is financed by the ISA Partnership Fund and will be opened to 20 government officials and scientists from ISA Member States.

The EIA training course that aligns and implements the ISA Capacity Development Strategy and the ISA Action Plan for Marine Scientific Research in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the main principles and techniques underpinning EIA in the context of exploration activities in the Area.

It is anticipated that participants will gain a full understanding of EIA principles, become completely acquainted with the standing legal framework for EIA relating to activities in the Area and become equipped to implement procedures and methodologies to evaluate potential environmental impacts relating to exploration activities in the Area based on current best practices throughout this training course.

The ISA Secretariat is committed to enhancing the role of women in marine scientific research through focused capacity development initiatives. Women from least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing are highly encouraged to apply.

The ISA Secretariat will cover the attendance costs, which include a return air ticket in economic class and a daily subsistence allowance for selected trainees from developing countries.

Interested participants may learn more about the application process and eligibility criteria and apply in accordance with the modalities set out in the Call for Applications no later than 31 May 2024. Successful candidates will be notified by 15 June 2024.
