The PORTWIMS Summer School is dedicated to enhance skills on blue entrepreneurship and is held just before the Lisbon United Nations Ocean Conference 2022. It is promoted by the H2020 PORTWIMS Project, supported by three highly prestigious institutions for marine research, technology transfer and blue entrepreneurship: The Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (Portugal), the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (UK) and the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (Germany).

It is aimed at graduate and post-graduate students as well as young entrepreneurs and innovators. Applicants should have their own innovation and/or business ideas which they are willing to present and develop during the workshops.

The PORTWIMS Summer School in Lisbon is entirely dedicated to entrepreneurship within the Blue Economy, and the development of an innovative idea for a startup. Limited spaces are available, and selected participants will have the chance to learn directly from leading experts in the field about:

  • Value chains: from invention to innovation
  • The necessary mind-set within academia
  • Technology scouting
  • Intellectual property issues
  • Patent portfolios, licensing
  • Industry co-operations and contract

Participants will work alongside experts to develop their own idea for a real startup project, and one selected project will be awarded. Graduate students, post-graduates, and early-career scientists interested in developing an innovative idea for use in the ocean sciences must submit an application by the 31st of March 2022. Successful applicants will be notified by the 14th of April 2022.

The course is free of charge and will be supported by the PORTWIMS project. All costs and arrangements regarding travel, accommodation and per diem expenses are to be covered by the participants.

Apply online at https://my.forms.app/rutehenriques/portwimssummerschool2022

Please note, there is no option to save the form partially completed and return to it later, so please check through the questions and make sure you have answers prepared and a CV to upload before completing. Some questions require detailed answers so it is recommended to prepare your responses first, for example, there is a requirement to provide a summary of an idea for an innovative project/product/business to develop, in marine sciences/blue economy (max. 600 words).
