Professor Trevor Platt FRS FRCS was a British and Canadian biological oceanographer who was distinguished for his fundamental contributions to many aspects of oceanography and in recent years, to limnology as well. He was committed to the stewardship of the ocean. His research interests were broad, and included, but were not limited to:

  • Primary production, physiology and ecology of marine phytoplankton
  • Thermodynamics of aquatic ecosystems
  • Physical and biological interactions in the ocean
  • Marine optics
  • Size structure of marine communities
  • Remote sensing of ocean colour
  • Ocean carbon cycle and climate change
  • Water quality and human health
  • Time series of ocean observations and their analyses
  • Ecological approaches to fisheries management
  • International collaboration and capacity building

We are seeking applications from outstanding early career researchers to undertake a research project at PML in any aspect of biological oceanography (fieldwork, earth observations, theoretical, ocean stewardship etc..), following on the legacy of Trevor Platt.

The fellowship will provide a bursary of £15k to include travel, visa, accommodation and living expenses. The aim is to allow a visit of between four to six months depending on distance, living costs and science activity. It is expected the fellowship will start in summer 2023 (June/July).

How to apply

To apply you will need the support of a PML host. Information on PML research can be found on our science topics pages and contact details for PML scientists can be found on our people page.

The application process will require information submitted by the applicant (research proposal, cv, capacity building statement) and the PML host (supporting statement containing a description of what the host will contribute and the suitability of the research environment).

Application deadline

The submission portal will open on the 1st of December 2022 and close on the 31st January 2023. Candidates are encouraged to contact a PML host before the portal opens.

Assessment process

Assessment of the proposals will take place in February and interviews (online) will take place at the start of March.

We will use five main criteria based on assessing the quality of the four documents submitted during the application process (three by the applicant and one by the host):

  1. Quality of the application
  2. Quality of applicant/CV
  3. Relevance of the application to the priority areas identified in the Fellowship Announcement
  4. Evidence that the training will lead to capacity-building with potential lasting impact on regional observations
  5. Adequacy of host supervisor/institute

The successful candidate will be confirmed by the end of March 2023 to allow time for visa applications and other appropriate paperwork to be completed.
