A number of shipboard training programmes have been supported by NF-POGO since 2015.
These have included transects along and across the Atlantic Ocean, time series stations, and many more.
RRS Discovery, operated by the NOC. The NOC’s newest research ship, and the fourth of its name, RRS Discovery is a multidisciplinary ship, specifically designed for the challenges of 21st century oceanography.
RV Polarstern – AWI’s Icebreaker. The RV Polarstern, a German research icebreaker of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, is one of the world’s most advanced and versatile polar research ships.
The NOC’s RRS Discovery. RRS Discovery was designed by A.S. Skipsteknisk and was delivered to the National Oceanography Centre on the 8 July 2013. Fitted with the most up-to-date and high-tech instruments and equipment, it is ideal for oceanic exploration.
RV Polarstern – operated by AWI in Bremerhaven. Commissioned on 9 December 1982, the German research icebreaker, RV Polarstern, has since logged more than 1.5 million nautical miles, or roughly 2.7 million kilometres (as of 2014).
RRS Discovery arrives in London. RRS Discovery is highly sophisticated and has the ability to operate in high sea states (up to sea-state 6). The ship’s dynamic positioning capability means that Remotely Operated Vehicles can be used.
The UK research vessel, RRS James Cook, operated by the NOC. RRS James Cook, named after the famous Captain James Cook, has played a significant role in oceanic research over the past decade.
