Open position: Scientific employee: Marine Biology, Fisheries Biology – Deadline 15 December 2024

The Institute of Sea Fisheries of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, at the Bremerhaven site is looking for, subject to the final approval of the project funds, at the earliest possible date for a limited period until 31.12.2027, a research assistant (f/m/d) (Marine biology, fisheries biology). Full-time (currently 39 hours/week) to work on the third-party funded project “Monitoring local and regional effects of offshore wind farms on fisheries resources to inform marine spatial planning”.

The aim of the pilot project is to obtain a basis for a better assessment of the fishing benefits of OWF in the southern North Sea, with the help of innovative data collection and its application in models as well as national and international collaboration. The focus is on the edible crab (Cancer pagurus), a species that is increasingly the focus of fishing use. Existing catch data will be evaluated and new data on recruitment and migratory behavior in and around wind farms in the southern North Sea will be collected. The migratory behavior will be analyzed using acoustic marking experiments. The catch data will be processed primarily for stock models and, if possible, also evaluated using model applications. The resulting improved data situation will form the basis for recommendations in the area of ​​spatial management approaches in the German EEZ in the North Sea in order to reduce conflicts of use in the long term and promote sustainable use of resources.

Your tasks:

  • Support in the application, coordination and implementation of experimental work in the wind farm as well as participation in sea voyages
  • Development and implementation of monitoring approaches to determine crayfish larval density, juvenile colonization rates and mapping of suitable areas for juvenile animals
  • Preparation and implementation of monitoring approaches regarding the migratory behaviour of edible crabs
  • Compilation and evaluation of available monitoring data and time series on local and regional scale
  • national and international collaboration (e.g. ICES) regarding data collection and evaluation
  • Supporting the project management in reporting, organizing working meetings and workshops and communicating the results

Your professional requirements profile:

  • Completed university degree (university diploma/master) or doctorate in marine biology, fisheries biology or comparable disciplines
  • Experience in coordinating and conducting experimental work at sea
  • Experience in data collection and analysis related to recruitment issues, such as larval identification
  • Experience in the application of acoustic markings and data evaluation
  • Experience in data analysis, use of databases and confident use of R and ArcGIS
  • Willingness and ability to work in an interdisciplinary project environment
  • strong cooperation and communication skills and proven publication background
