Eligibility of Applicants

Participation is open to all citizens of West Africa, particularly graduates, postgraduates and undergraduates, mid-level officers in marine related institutions, staff of relevant NGOs, policy makers within Ministries and Departments, IOI Alumni and any interested members of the public.

The Ocean Academy’s training on “Cultural and Indigenous Perspectives of the Ocean” explores the deep connections between human cultures and the ocean, with a special focus on Indigenous knowledge and practices. This course highlights the importance of understanding and integrating cultural perspectives in marine conservation and sustainable management efforts. Participants will gain valuable insights into the ways Indigenous communities have sustainably interacted with marine environments for generations, and how this knowledge can inform modern conservation and ocean governance strategies.

Learning outcomes

  • Introduce participants to Indigenous worldviews, traditions, and knowledge systems related to the ocean, emphasising their sustainable practices and spiritual connections to marine environments;
  • Highlight the cultural, social, and spiritual significance of oceans to various communities, with a focus on how these relationships shape sustainable ocean use and conservation efforts;
  • Provide insights into traditional marine resource management practices employed by Indigenous communities, including fishing techniques, sacred marine sites, and seasonal harvesting patterns;
  • Examine ways to integrate Indigenous perspectives and knowledge into contemporary marine conservation and sustainable development initiatives, fostering collaboration between communities, scientists, and policymakers;
  • Discuss the importance of recognising and protecting the rights of Indigenous peoples over their ancestral marine territories and resources, ensuring their participation in ocean governance;
  • Explore how preserving cultural heritage and Indigenous languages contributes to broader marine conservation goals, fostering respect for traditional practices and ocean stewardship.
