PostDoc in treatment and valorization of aquaculture waste – Deadline 02 January 2025

Are you a talented, self-motivated, and team-oriented individual who thrives in a collaborative environment? Do you want to make a significant impact on the sustainability of aquaculture? If you are building your career as a scientist and have a keen interest in aquaculture, we have an excellent opportunity for you.

DTU-AQUA is seeking a Postdoc to join our leading international group on intensive aquaculture technology. You will play a crucial role in developing innovative tools for the removal and valorization of aquaculture waste.

In this position, you will work closely with colleagues in the Section for Aquaculture at DTU Aqua in Hirtshals, Denmark, to develop various methods and technologies for effectively managing and potentially valorizing aquaculture waste in its different forms.

Responsibilities and qualifications

Your main focus will be to strengthen the Sections competences in end-of-pipe treatment and valorization of aquaculture waste, contributing significantly to the development of innovative technologies in this field. You will work closely with nearby colleagues in the Section, as well as with academic and industrial partners both in Denmark and abroad. Your primary tasks will include:

  • Developing and advancing current knowledge on the use of RAS effluents for plants, algae, and other lower trophic production
  • Contributing to various on-going projects related to end-of-pipe treatment, waste valorization, and aquaponics
  • Teaching and supervising BSc and MSc students, and potentially co-supervising PhD students

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). We favor candidates with a degree in process engineering, chemistry, biotechnology, biology or another relevant discipline. The candidate should have documented experience and scientific publications within waste treatment, residual resource recovery, and/or aquaculture effluents.

In addition, we are looking for the following qualifications:

  • Scientific curiosity and eager to advance current scientific knowledge in the field
  • Innovative, independent, and self-driven research capabilities and good problem-solving skills
  • Experience and knowledge on mass loading, mass balances, and -calculations
  • Analytical skills in traditional water quality methods and interest in developing new methods (e.g., fluorescence spectroscopy or ion chromatography) applicable for aquaculture processes
  • Proficiency in biological, chemical and physical processes related to aquaculture effluents and low trophic aquaculture
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and dedication to communicating and disseminating the work developed
