Marine Biologist Position – Zooplankton Research

‍The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) in Iceland is seeking for a marine biologist to conduct research on marine zooplankton. The employment rate is 100% and it is based at MFRI headquarters in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. Participation in research expeditions at sea is expected.

About the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute

The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute is Iceland’s largest research institute in the field of marine and freshwater research and also plays an advisory role on the prudent utilisation and protection of marine and freshwater resources. It is under the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. In addition to its headquarters in Hafnarfjörður, the institute operates offices all over the country, an experimental farm, two research vessels, and the institute employs about 190 people in a variety of jobs. Main tasks

  • Research on the biology and ecology of marine zooplankton, including species diversity and variability in their abundance, composition and distribution.
  • Assessing the potential for exploitation of marine zooplankton.
  • Management of tasks within large research projects.Participating in developing new research projects, including writing applications for grants to domestic and foreign research funds.
  • Involved in developing new research projects, including writing applications for grants to domestic and foreign research funds.

Education and qualification requirements

  • PhD in marine biology.
  • Experience in research in the field of marine biology, especially related to zooplankton.
  • Proficiency in R for data analysis.
  • Ambition, initiative and independence in working methods.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to collaborate and ability to work in a team.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of Icelandic is an advantage.

About the position and wages

‍Wages are in accordance with the current collective agreement made by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs and the relevant union. The application deadline is 17 January 2025.
