Open Position for Master thesis: Phytoplankton biogeography

Background
Research division: Polar Biological Oceanography

As part of the EU funded project PORTWIMS, a twinning project between AWI, the University of Lisbon and Plymouth Marine Laboratory, we are looking for a Masters student to work on a Phytoplankton biogeography project.

The goal of the project is to investigate the diversity of phytoplankton in Portuguese waters, to compile a detailed baseline inventory of historic phytoplankton records in and to compare this with recently collected samples to analyse changes in the species compostion between the historic and modern assemblages. The work will also contribute to the production of a detailed phytoplankton guide for Portuguese waters.

Tasks

  • Analyse phytoplankton samples using different microscopy techniques e.g. epifluorescence, SEM),
  • collate literature references and data from online repositories to establish a historic biodiversity baseline,
  • produce detailed maps of key phytoplankton taxa e.g. HABs in Portuguese waters

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of phytoplankton groups,
  • experience in data analysis and visualization, preferentially in R
  • willingness to carry out a 4-week research stay at the University of Lisbon

Further Information
The place of work will be Bremerhaven, but a short research stay at the laboratories of MARE of the University Lisbon may be included.
