THE INSTITUTE

The Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) is the national oceanographic institute, and conducts and promotes academically excellent multidisciplinary fundamental and ground-breaking applied marine research. NIOZ focuses on scientific and social questions that are important for the functioning of oceans and seas. NIOZ acts as a national marine research facilitator (NMF) for the Dutch scientific community.

THE DEPARTMENT

The research of the Department of Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry (MMB) has a long history of studying archaea and other marine microbes, their interactions and their role in biogeochemical cycles in various marine environments, ranging from mudflats and coral reefs to the deep ocean and sediments . The department is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, bioinformatics and analytical equipment, and has an excellent level of technical support.

THE POSITION

We are an enthusiastic team of five analysts who enjoy contributing to research into the smallest organisms in the seas and oceans. The microbiology laboratories are part of the MMB department, which employs 17 researchers, 19 analysts and approximately 70 temporary employees.

As a laboratory employee with a (micro)biological and/or chemical background, you have a varied range of tasks:

  • under sterile conditions, making various standard media for anaerobic and aerobic prokaryotes and phytoplankton cultures
  • help maintain the prokaryote and phytoplankton culture collection
  • making reagents
  • maintaining standard equipment such as autoclaves, balances and pH meters
  • maintaining laboratory stocks and placing orders for the microbiological laboratories
  • instructing students and researchers on standard laboratory equipment and activities
  • You carry out work in accordance with available work regulations and/or instructions.
  • You work accurately and independently, but you also enjoy working in a team and learning new tasks.

Requirements

THE CANDIDATE

  • you have completed an MBO education (MLO)
  • you have good communication skills, both oral and written in English and Dutch
  • you have a cooperative attitude
  • You are interested in nature and science and have an affinity with the climate and biodiversity
  • you live within a commutable distance of our location on Texel

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

  • An appointment at NIOZ is an appointment at NWO-I , for a period of 1 year for 40 hours per week, which will be converted into an appointment for an indefinite period upon mutual satisfaction.
  • A fair classification in scale 6 or 7 in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement-WVOI , integration into the scale depends on your work experience and education level and direction.

  • 338 holiday hours per year, based on a full-time working week of 40 hours.
  • Pension scheme through ABP, 8% holiday pay in May and an end-of-year bonus in December of 8.33%.
  • Telephone reimbursement of €15 per month, in proportion to your employment.
  • 2nd class travel by public transport is 100% reimbursed.
  • An employment conditions scheme whereby salary can be exchanged for days off or vice versa, or you can use salary or leave hours once every 5 years to purchase a bicycle with a tax benefit.
