PhD position: Mathematical modelling of the ecology & evolution of marine invertebrates  – Deadline when position is filled

The position

The candidate will use a suite of coupled mathematical models of marine invertebrate macro-evolution that is spatially explicit, whose dynamics are governed by plate tectonics and kinematics. The objective of the INIDICiOS project is to reconstruct the history of life on Earth and gain a deeper understanding of the forces that shaped the observed biodiversity up until today. The PhD student will: i) work on improving the existing models by incorporating speciation and extinction rates, after implementing Bayesian calibration techniques; ii) perform simulations of the diversification of marine invertebrates since their origin, mapping the emergence, evolution, and demise of biodiversity hotspots; iii) investigate the mechanisms underlying the origins and dynamics of the latitudinal biodiversity gradient (LBG) and biodiversity hotspots. Your profile

  • MSc in mathematics, physics, engineering, computer sciences, marine sciences, or related disciplines.
  • Good knowledge in computer programming (any language: MATLAB, Python, R, Julia, FORTRAN)
  • Creative and independent thinking with an interest in complex systems theory.

The Institute of Marine Sciences @ Barcelona (CSIC) is looking for a candidate to fill a job offer in mathematical eco-evolutionary modelling of marine ecosystems. The open position is within the frame of a research project (INDICiOS), funded by the Spanish National Science Foundation. The INDICiOS project will have a profound scientific impact, contributing to a new understanding of marine biodiversity, informing conservation priorities by understanding the deep history of biodiversity hotspots, fostering collaboration between geologists, paleobiologists, evolutionary ecologists and Earth system modellers, and developing a versatile modelling tool that will enable addressing the biodiversity history of life, from metazoans to microorganisms.
