Open position: Chief engineer in microbiology – Deadline 01 August 2024

The position

At the Department of Arctic and Marine Biology (AMB), UiT Norway’s Arctic University, there is a 50% permanent position available as a chief engineer. The position is linked to the research group “Microorganisms and Plants” (MP).

AMB includes 6 research groups. Research and teaching at AMB has a broad span, from molecular mechanisms at cellular/subcellular levels via studies of adaptations at the organismal level, to ecological interactions in aquatic and terrestrial environments. The institute is an exciting and cutting-edge academic and research unit in biology that addresses challenges in basic research, industrial and administrative-oriented research with a strong focus on the North. The Institute has extensive national and international research collaboration including regional institutions like Framsenteret, IMR and NIBIO.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø.

Job description

The chief engineer will actively participate in the teaching and research work carried out within the MP research group.

The tasks will include:

  • Operation of anaerobic glove boxes and bioreactors for experiments and working with samples under controlled conditions – associated with setup, operation, maintenance, and safety (gas and chemicals).
  • Use, maintenance and service of gas chromatographs. You will alos work with safty procurement, and upkeep of equipment for daily operations, contact with manufacturers and distributors, as well as training of students and researchers.
  • Operation of local gas storage and related tasks such as ordering and maintenance of equipment.
  • Contribution to supervision and training of master’s and PhD students.
  • Contribution to preparation and teaching of the master’s and PhD course BIO 3018/8018 (Environmental Molecular Genetics).
  • Contributions to the HSE work at the faculty re. teaching and labs
  • Changes in work tasks will have to be taken into account.

Qualifications

  • Master’s in Microbiology
  • Experience with cultivation of methanotrophic microorganisms
  • Experience with cultivation microorganisms in bioreactors
  • Experience with gas measurements using gas chromatography and laser spectrometry
  • Experience with advanced experiments and autosampling technology
  • Experience with fieldwork in Arctic areas
  • You must be fluent in English, and preferable have a good command of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language. If not, you are expected to learn Norwegian within two years.

Remuneration of Chief Engineer positions are in salary code 1087 on the pay scale for Norwegian state employees. There is a 2% deduction for contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
